Al Ahly legend Mohamed Aboutrika has delivered strong and decisive remarks regarding the pressures and recent dips in performance within the Red Castle. He emphasized that football is not solely about continuous winning, but also encompasses draws and defeats-even though major clubs are always expected to delight their supporters.
Speaking on beIN Sports, Aboutrika urged Al Ahly fans to be realistic when accepting the game’s fluctuations, citing the current situation at Spanish giants Barcelona under Hansi Flick following their defeat in El Clásico against Real Madrid.
The retired star firmly rejected the notion of “complacency” or being “satiated” with winning titles as an excuse for declining technical performance or player relaxation. In a sharp tone, he stated: “There is no such thing as complacency in the world of football. Whoever experiences this state should just stay at home! Especially since big clubs never get tired of winning.”
“The Magico” stressed that Al Ahly’s identity has historically been rooted in clinching gold, and its fans never settle for anything less than victories. This standard imposes a doubled responsibility on the team members to handle persistent pressures and maintain the club’s shining legacy.
Aboutrika’s messages coincided with a wave of anger among the red-clad supporters following a slowdown in results in the Egyptian Premier League. The team stumbled with draws against Al-Qanah and El Mokawloon El Arab, placing them second in the standings-four points behind leaders Pyramids.
Sharp criticisms have also targeted Moroccan manager Houcine Ammouta following the team’s modest performance against Modern Sport in the eighth round, raising widespread fan doubts over his continuation at the helm. In response, Al Ahly’s board moved to renew its full support for the coaching staff led by Ammouta, rejecting the idea of sacking him or making hasty changes, relying on the team’s record of remaining undefeated across 11 official matches so far.
