The technical staff of the United Arab Emirates national football team, led by Croatian head coach Zlatko Dalić, is stepping up efforts to finalize the squad’s roster. Dalić is focused on building a well-rounded lineup that offers diverse tactical options ahead of the upcoming 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.
Monitoring goes beyond domestic league matches. According to reports from the UAE’s Al-Ittihad Sport, Dalić is closely tracking seven clubs competing in continental and regional fixtures this week across both the AFC Champions League and the Gulf Club Champions League, alongside following the high-stakes derbies in Round 8 of the ADNOC Pro League.
The main objective of this close observation is to test the consistency of international players under continental pressure and high physical demands. The Croatian manager’s philosophy centers on creating a bench as strong as the starting XI, allowing seamless squad rotation tailored to each opponent-the same strategy that led the team to a runner-up finish at the 27th Gulf Cup in Jeddah.
The national team will enter an internal training camp in Abu Dhabi from November 9 to 17, marking the second phase of their preparation plan. During this period, the team will play two friendly matches:
vs. Honduras: November 13 at Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
vs. Syria: November 17 at Hazza bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain.
Through these two fixtures, the coaching staff aims to focus on breaking down low-block defenses and matching physical intensity-simulating what awaits “The Whites” in Group E of the Asian Cup, where they are grouped alongside South Korea, Vietnam, and Yemen. Additionally, the team will focus on accelerating build-up play and capitalizing on quick counter-attacks.
Preliminary details regarding the upcoming squad call-up suggest potential inclusions of new faces who did not feature in the recent Gulf Cup. Meanwhile, the medical readiness of the key duo, Caio Canedo and Fabio Lima, is currently being evaluated following their recovery from injury, as both are considered pivotal figures in the manager’s tactical plans.
On another front, the UAE Football Association is working to arrange a high-profile friendly match against Japan in late December or early January. Although a final agreement has not yet been reached, the push to face the “Samurai Blue” stems from Dalić’s desire to test his players against a fast pace and tactical discipline similar to that of the South Korean national team before officially kicking off their Asian Cup campaign.
