Carlo Ancelotti, manager of the Brazilian national team, has sparked tension with Barcelona’s board after announcing his official squad for the upcoming international break, which included winger Raphinha. The decision comes despite clear reservations and objections recently raised by the Catalan club. Brazil is scheduled to play two friendly matches during the November camp: first against Japan on Saturday, November 14, and then against Singapore on November 17.
Spanish outlet Sport highlighted the severe physical toll awaiting the Blaugrana star, noting that his round trip with the national team will cover approximately 22,000 kilometers. This massive journey has raised strong concerns among Barcelona’s technical staff regarding player fatigue and overload.
This decision comes at a delicate time, following earlier statements by Barcelona president Joan Laporta expressing intense frustration over the direct impact on his club after Raphinha sustained an injury during a friendly match against Australia on September 29. Laporta strongly criticized the excessive international commitments, tight match schedules, and lengthy breaks that drain top club players.
During a press conference at the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, Ancelotti addressed questions about Laporta’s dissatisfaction with firm resolve: “We maintain good relations with both Brazilian and European clubs, and we exchange information regarding players. Overall, this relationship is positive.”
The Italian manager reaffirmed the independence of his tactical decisions, adding: “We have not received any specific requests, nor do we need to. During FIFA-sanctioned international breaks, we will call up the players we consider important for the Brazilian national team. We have started a rebuilding project, and this is the ideal time to do so. In September, we began evaluating younger players, and we are continuing that process with individuals who represent our future. We have assembled a balanced squad that includes 9 players of Olympic age and up to 15 players under the age of 23.”
He continued by emphasizing reliance on core veterans with World Cup experience: “We have selected 5 players who participated in the World Cup and will play a pivotal role in this phase as we head toward the Copa América and another World Cup: Marquinhos, Gabriel, Guimarães, Vinícius, and Raphinha. We also called up Douglas Santos due to his very positive performance at the World Cup.”
Despite fan curiosity about how Raphinha will be deployed-and whether he might feature as a central striker, as he recently did for both Barcelona and against Australia-Ancelotti kept his tactical plans close to his chest, simply noting: “We have versatile attackers who can play across multiple positions.”
