Former Zamalek SC captain Mahmoud Abdel Razek “Shikabala” has made surprising remarks, calling on Egypt national team manager Hossam Hassan to resign and step down from his position.
These strong comments come at a critical time as the Egyptian national team undergoes a closed training camp during the current international break. The squad is preparing for two crucial matches against Malawi during the third and fourth rounds of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with the first leg scheduled in Cairo before traveling away for the return fixture.
During an appearance on the “El-Kora Ma’a Fayek” show on MBC Masr 2, Shikabala stated that he has never witnessed such a high level of controversy surrounding a national team manager throughout the history of the Pharaohs. He noted that his advice stems from genuine affection and appreciation for the “Dean” of Egyptian football, quoting: “As someone who cares deeply for Hossam Hassan, you should submit your resignation, because the manager of the Egyptian national team must have prestige and a strong personality-qualities we have not seen over the past period.”
The former White Castle captain continued in a decisive tone, emphasizing that stability and mutual respect are foundational to the success of the national team’s technical leadership, stating: “The noise surrounding the Egypt national team manager should not exist. He needs to hold a special status and be viewed by the players as a massive symbol, just as young players look up to Mohamed Salah as a symbol. No one is bigger than Egypt.”
