The Referees Committee at the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has officially dropped the file regarding the potential appointment of Somali referee Omar Artan to officiate Egyptian Premier League matches this season, following a period of circulating reports about his possible inclusion among the local officiating crews.
Previously, Essam Abdel-Fatah, head of the Referees Committee, had stated that Artan expressed a desire to reside in Egypt and experience refereeing in the domestic competition, noting at the time that the request would be studied and discussed by officials.
In this context, a source within the committee revealed the final stance in exclusive remarks to Btolat, stating: “The proposal for Omar Artan to join Egyptian referees was not agreed upon, and he will not be officiating among Egyptian referees in the coming period.”
This decision puts an end to all recent speculations regarding the possibility of assigning prominent domestic league matches to the Somali referee. Notably, Artan had previously officiated the UEFA Super Cup match between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa last August-a move supported by UEFA following his omission from the refereeing lineup for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
