The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened heated discussions that could redraw the map of continental competitions anew, as the executive committee led by Patrice Motsepe is considering retracting the previous proposal to hold the Africa Cup of Nations every 4 years and sticking to the traditional schedule of holding it every 2 years.
Reports attributed to CAF last December indicated a direction to restructure the continent’s most important tournament to be held every four years starting from the 2028 edition. However, new developments have recently emerged in the discussions. According to the Moroccan website “Al-Batalah,” CAF officials are seriously considering abandoning this amendment and maintaining the usual pace, which would ensure the 2027 edition is held on schedule, followed directly by the 2029 edition without long intervals.
The agenda of the executive committee meetings is not limited to the fate of the “CAN” only, but also extends to reviewing the final arrangements for next season’s club tournaments, in addition to finalizing the details for the anticipated African Super Cup match in Johannesburg on November 8 between Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa and CR Belouizdad of Algeria.
At the end of the agenda, the Secretary-General of the African Union, Samson Adamu, is preparing to review the hosting rights and commercial and marketing offers related to the upcoming editions for the years 2028, 2032, and 2036, to finalize the financial and administrative direction of the tournament in the near future.
