The talk about the possibility of the Somali referee “Omar Artan” taking on the task of managing the anticipated match between Al-Ahly and Pyramids has sparked widespread controversy in the Egyptian sports community in recent hours.
This news comes after the confirmation from the head of the referees committee of the Egyptian Football Association, Essam Abdel Fattah, that Ertan expressed his desire to settle in Egypt and participate in officiating local league matches, a request that is still under consideration. The Red Giant is expected to clash with the Pyramids team on November 23rd, in the ninth round of the Premier League competition.
In this context, reports revealed the final stance of the referees’ committee, confirming that Artan is completely out of the running for the selection of the officiating crew for this football summit. The Somali referee had recently drawn significant attention when he was assigned to officiate the UEFA Super Cup match between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa last August, thanks to substantial support he received from UEFA as compensation for his exclusion from participating in the 2026 World Cup finals in the United States.
Regarding the main reasons for excluding the Somali referee from officiating the Egyptian summit, the source explained: “This is because Al-Ahly requested in their letter that the match referee be from the top five leagues, and therefore Omar Artan was excluded.” The source added, revealing the current committee’s actions: “The referees’ committee is striving to bring a refereeing crew from the top five leagues who are of a high level of excellence. Spain was nominated, but they are not at the required level.”
These developments and the scrutiny of selections come in light of the system’s keenness to avoid any new crises, especially after the events that took place in the recent summit match between Al-Ahly and Zamalek, which was officiated by a Slovenian refereeing crew and witnessed strong objections from the officials of the White Castle regarding the refereeing performance throughout the match.
