The Spanish Football Federation has settled the ongoing controversy regarding the complaint filed by Atlético Madrid against FC Barcelona, stemming from the negotiations conducted by the Catalan team’s officials to sign Argentine striker Julián Álvarez during the current summer transfer window. The disciplinary committee merely imposed a symbolic fine of six hundred and two euros on Barcelona.
The management of the capital club had resorted to the judicial authorities in the local federation, objecting to Barcelona opening direct channels of communication with Alvarez without prior notification, at a time when the player is still bound by a valid official contract with his team, which constitutes a violation of the regulations in force within Spanish competitions.
The officials of the Rojiblancos based their memorandum on the explicit text in the regulations of the Spanish League, which states literally: “The club wishing to sign a professional player must inform the club to which the player currently belongs of its intention in writing, before starting any negotiations with the player.”
Regarding international intervention, FIFA refrained from intervening in the crisis or opening a separate investigation, confirming that the dispute falls outside its jurisdiction as it is an internal regulatory matter subject to the sovereignty of the local federation in Spain, which has addressed the incident through its own disciplinary regulations.
The meager financial penalty came in accordance with the provisions of Article 133, which pertains to violations of non-compliance with instructions and regulations. The regulations grant the responsible committee the authority to determine appropriate sanctions, which range from imposing limited fines on the club not exceeding six hundred and two euros, to imposing stricter penalties such as temporary suspension or partial bans on playing matches with audience attendance.
This crisis brings to mind a similar scenario that occurred between the two clubs in the summer of 2019 when Barcelona signed Frenchman Antoine Griezmann. Atlético Madrid responded with similar official measures, which ended with a symbolic decision imposing a fine of only three hundred euros on the Catalan club. The same scene is repeated, and the current case is closed without imposing any real sporting restrictions that would affect the league leader’s progress.
