A wave of grief and astonishment has swept through Spanish football following an official announcement by CD Tenerife confirming the tragic death of their forward, Jesús de Miguel, as a result of a severe injury sustained during a Segunda División match against Andorra. The fatality occurred following a violent collision with opposing goalkeeper Jesús Lazaro Owono, placing the latter under the threat of strict disciplinary actions.
According to the Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo, goalkeeper Owono faces a potential suspension of up to 12 matches. This projection is based on the possible activation of Article 102 of the Royal Spanish Football Federation’s (RFEF) Disciplinary Code, which addresses acts of violence against opponents during matches that result in severe physical harm.
The tragic incident unfolded in the final moments of Monday night’s fixture during the 90th minute, when the goalkeeper leaped to clear a cross. His challenge violently struck forward De Miguel in the chest area, causing the player to suffer sudden cardiac arrest and respiratory failure. Despite rapid medical intervention on the pitch and his subsequent transfer to the intensive care unit, De Miguel’s condition deteriorated until he passed away the following morning.
In his official match report, referee Manuel Ángel Pérez Hernández noted that a red card was shown to the goalkeeper for using excessive force and kicking an opponent with a raised leg. He also added that the decision to abandon the match definitively in the 96th minute was reached by mutual agreement between both teams and their managements, as it was impossible to play the remaining minutes due to the profound psychological shock suffered by the players on the pitch.
In the wake of the tragedy, goalkeeper Jesús Owono deactivated all of his official and personal social media accounts, while the sports world awaits the Competition Committee’s final ruling regarding the disciplinary sanctions he will face.
