Global sports reports have placed Egyptian star Mohamed Salah, Trabzonspor winger, at the top of the list of players benefitting most from the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) recent decision to return to holding the Africa Cup of Nations every two years, abandoning the previous proposal to host it every four years.
According to an analytical report published by SPORTbible, this shift opens the door wide for the Egypt captain to make up for the only major trophy missing from his cabinet. Despite being 34, the ruling gives him additional opportunities to compete on the continental stage, alongside other prominent stars gaining the same advantage, such as Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi and Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman.
The British outlet notes that an AFCON title represents the final missing puzzle piece to complete the “Egyptian King’s” legacy, arguably cementing his status as the greatest African player of all time. Under the previous schedule, the 2028 tournament was likely to be Salah’s final continental appearance, limiting his remaining chances strictly to 2027 and 2028. Now, with his ambition extending to appearing in the 2030 World Cup, he has an added opportunity to participate in the 2031 edition before bringing down the curtain on his international career as he approaches 40.
Salah’s relationship with the tournament has long been defined by drama and misfortune. His international journey began during a sensitive period marked by the suspension of football activity in Egypt. Nevertheless, he led his national team to two finals in 2017 and 2021-losing to Cameroon and Senegal, respectively-in addition to a semi-final exit against Senegal in the 2025 edition despite his standout individual performances. Coupled with Egypt’s tough Round of 16 exit against Argentina at the 2026 World Cup, these setbacks have given him added motivation to secure continental glory.
The report highlights the 2027 tournament as Salah’s prime golden challenge, supported by a strong generation featuring key talents like Emam Ashour and Haïssem Hassan. However, the biggest advantage of the two-year cycle lies in relieving the psychological pressure on his shoulders: he now knows that a setback in the next edition will not signal a definitive end to his continental dream, as another chance for redemption will follow soon after.
