The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has settled the ongoing debate regarding the frequency of its premier tournament, unanimously announcing a final retreat from the proposal to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) once every four years. The body has instead resolved to maintain the traditional biennial format, responding to pressures and demands raised by the majority of domestic federations across the continent.
This decision comes following a period of discussions initiated by CAF President Patrice Motsepe after a comprehensive review of the feasibility of previous amendments. CAF based its step on precise financial and organizational data, as officials found that the proposed alternative, the “African Nations League,” would not be able in the near future to secure the massive financial revenues required by the African football ecosystem to sustain itself and compete. This made preserving the current system a necessity to protect resources and the interests of the 54 member associations, alongside accommodating the circumstances of professional players in international leagues.
Based on this approved direction, upcoming editions of the Africa Cup of Nations are scheduled as follows:
On an official level, the platform conveyed statements from the CAF President highlighting the cultural and popular dimensions of the tournament. Patrice Motsepe stated: “The Africa Cup of Nations is not just about football; it is a celebration of Africa’s rich and diverse cultures, customs, and traditions. It is a means that brings together peoples from the 54 African nations, from African diasporas abroad, and from all over the world.”
Motsepe concluded by emphasizing how the decision aligns with development plans: “The decision of the CAF Executive Committee serves the best interests of African football and the 54 member associations, and it will significantly contribute to the development and growth of football on the African continent.”
