Former Al Ahli and Egypt national team star Mohamed Barakat has delivered direct and decisive remarks to Al Ahli midfielder Imam Ashour, urging him to re-evaluate his performance and quickly regain his usual form, noting that his dip in form clearly impacts the team’s offensive system.
Barakat’s comments came during a television appearance on MBC Masr 2, where he discussed Al Ahli’s fluctuating results and the sudden drop in performance of some key players. He began by evaluating the team’s recent period with transparency, stressing the necessity of fighting for every available title to compensate for past setbacks, and pointing out that the CAF Confederation Cup is an indispensable goal that must be won to delight the fans.
Barakat stated on air: “Last season, Al Ahli was poor, and we admitted that-this is football. We didn’t deserve to win the league and we didn’t have a good season, but that happens. Even if the Confederation Cup is the second-tier tournament, it remains a major title for Al Ahli and its fans, and the team is required to compete for it and win it this season.”
Regarding the noticeable decline in the midfielder’s performance, Barakat contrasted Ashour’s brilliant beginnings with his current situation, saying: “Imam Ashour was Al Ahli’s top scorer the season before last, and the fans spoke very highly of him. During the recent phase, there was an issue regarding his contract renewal, which has now ended. However, we were surprised to find that, after this matter was resolved, Imam Ashour is simply not at his best.”
Barakat concluded his remarks with a direct and decisive piece of advice for the player: “Obviously, this is a wake-up call, and the recent remarks by President Mahmoud El Khatib were not just a passing conversation. He must realize that his credit with the fans is running out. He needs to perform in a way that justifies the salary he receives, focus, and fight for his place at Al Ahli, because his absence from the squad causes us problems.”
