Arsenal bid farewell to the English Football League Cup in a dramatic and shocking manner for its fans, suffering a resounding defeat against Fleetwood Town in a penalty shootout with a score of 5-3, after the regular time ended in a 1-1 draw. This fiery encounter took place on Tuesday evening as part of the fourth round matches of the tournament.
The home team surprised the visitors with an early offensive push and a well-organized defense that unsettled the London team from the first minutes. Fleetwood translated their advantage into a lead at the 21st minute when player Aaron Loupalo received a precise pass from his teammate Neil, penetrated the penalty area, and skillfully found the back of the net.
The Gunners entered the second half with intense pressure, seeking to equalize and avoid an early exit, which was indeed achieved in the 50th minute by Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres, who brought the match back to square one. This intensified the competition between the two sides to secure a ticket to the next stage.
Arsenal’s ambitions took a severe blow in the final moments of the match when the referee issued a red card to player Max Daumann in the 86th minute, forcing his team to hold on with ten players until the final whistle, leading to a direct penalty shootout to determine the qualifier.
The Fleetwood Town players maintained their complete composure during the penalty shootout, clinching the series in their favor with a score of 5-3, marking one of the biggest surprises of the current football season by eliminating the London giant and securing a well-deserved spot in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
