The Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) announcement of the 10-man shortlist for the 2026 African Player of the Year award has sparked widespread debate. The selections ignited fierce discussions among football fans across social media and sports media outlets following the omission of high-profile names who made a decisive impact for their clubs and national teams over the past period, according to a report published by Erem News.
The official shortlist features 10 players competing to succeed Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi, the reigning holder of last year’s title. Hakimi features once again among the nominees alongside his compatriots Brahim Díaz and Ismael Saibari, alongside Senegal’s Sadio Mané and his teammates Ismaïla Sarr and Pape Gueye, as well as Côte d’Ivoire’s Amad Diallo, DR Congo’s Yoane Wissa, and Ghana’s Antoine Semenyo.
The winner of the continent’s most prestigious individual award is set to be announced during the annual CAF Awards ceremony on December 7 in Lagos, Nigeria. The event will also honor the winners of the best coach, best young player, best national team, and best club within the continent.
However, what drew the most attention was not who made the list, but rather the shocking omissions of heavyweights. The nominations notably excluded names who were considered frontrunners, led by Egyptian star and Liverpool captain Mohamed Salah, Algerian star Riyad Mahrez, Nigerian lethal forward Victor Osimhen, his compatriot and continental standout Ademola Lookman, and Borussia Dortmund’s Guinean goalscorer Serhou Guirassy.
