Anticipation and widespread debate have gripped the sports community across Asia, following mounting leaks suggesting that the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is leaning toward postponing the start of the 2027 Asian Cup finals from its scheduled early-year date to late December 2027.
Sports journalist Isa Saeed revealed on his official X (formerly Twitter) account-citing authoritative sources within the continental governing body-that there is an active study to adjust the tournament schedule to December instead of January 2027. Final clarity and an official decision are expected within the coming days.
These speculations come at a critical time, particularly as Saudi Arabia intensifies its field preparations to host the 19th edition of the flagship Asian tournament. The AFC had recently confirmed the official match schedule and venues, setting the tournament for January 7 to February 5, 2027.
The primary driver behind discussing potential delay options is the rapidly evolving security situation in the Middle East. Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, President of the AFC, previously stated that the federation prefers to wait and assess the situation until late November. He did not rule out a full-year postponement to 2028 if ground conditions require it, while emphasizing that the current official schedule remains in place subject to continuous monitoring.
Meanwhile, the Saudi Local Organizing Committee reaffirmed its commitment to the approved operational plan to prepare facilities, stadiums, and infrastructure. Close coordination with relevant AFC committees continues to ensure a flawless delivery. Under the current schedule, the Saudi national team is slated to kick off the tournament against Palestine on January 7 at King Fahd Sports City Stadium in Riyadh.
The month-long tournament features the group stage running through January 20, followed by the Round of 16 starting January 22, the Quarter-finals on January 28-29, and the Semi-finals on February 1-2, culminating in the final on February 5. This historic edition features 24 teams divided into six groups:
